The Essential Field Guides to humanitarian and conflict zones (EFGs) are a series of handbooks for journalists, aid workers, soldiers, diplomats, academics, entrepreneurs or general interest readers seeking to grasp the context, understand a country or situation and operate safely in dangerous and what are often constantly changing environments. The first in this series is The Essential Field Guide to Afghanistan, whose 4th fully revised edition is being currently produced. Planned Essential Field Guides include titles focusing on Climate Change, Human Rights, Lifeline Media (2nd edition) and other global themes.
The EFG series arose when the United Nations, NGOs and others involved with Afghanistan during the late 1990s realised that what was lacking was a practical and quick reference handbook on the country and its ongoing conflict and humanitarian situation. The first EFG, which was produced in 1998 and known as the "Taliban" edition,  was followed by further fully-revised updates in 2004 and 2006. The 4th edition now being produced offers a unique over three-decade perspective on what is happening in the country today, providing key insights into political, humanitarian, reconstruction, military, cultural, health, agricultural, environmental, human rights and other related issues through critical essays, detailed information briefs and essential data. Whether for old hands or newcomers, this guide also offers practical tips on travel as well as synthesis on Afghan history,  languages, traditions and customs. A Dari version is expected to be produced once the 4th English-language edition is complete. More info about the Essential Field Guides
